June 2, 2008 - National Merit Scholarship Winners Named
Several USM seniors have been named as winners of National Merit Scholarships. Seniors Matthew Bures and Ryan Khanna received the National Merit Northwestern University Scholarship where they plan to attend in the fall of 2008. Stewart Long received the National Merit Scholarship of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Scholarship. Emily Cooley and Lisa Koenig have been selected as recipients of a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship to the institution of their choice. Congratulations!
May 27, 2008 - Upper School Scholars Recognized The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, in cooperation with Brewers Charities, Inc., recognize students for academic achievement and effort each year. Congratulations to the Upper School students who were selected for the 2008 awards and received two Brewers tickets. May 21, 2008 - Middle School Scholars Recognized

May 21, 2008 - Update: Fed Challenge Team Named Runner-Up in National Competition Congratulations to the Upper School Fed Challenge Team who was named runner-up at the national High School Fed Challenge in Washington D.C.! Emily Cooley, Saptarshi Ghose, Ryan Khanna, Stewart Long, Henry Stewart, and Max Werkecke will represent the Seventh Federal Reserve District in the national event on May 18 and 19 after winning the state and district-level competitions. May 19, 2008 - Student Scientists Compete at International Science Fair Juniors Malcolm Greaves and Anna Shimshak attended the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world's largest international pre-college science competition, held in Atlanta from May 11-17. The fair was attended by more than 1,500 students from over 50 countries and territories. Anna Shimshak won a special award from the Office of Naval Research for her project, "The Antimicrobial Characteristics of Metallic Nanoparticles and Their Application in Water Filtration", in the category of environmental management. The award includes a tuition scholarship in the amount of $8,000. Congratulations to both students!
May 19, 2008 - USM Chess Players Excel at National Championship Tournaments
Fifteen USM students went to the 2008 National Burt Lerner Elementary (k-6) Championship in Pittsburgh May 9-11. Over 2,100 students from around the country played in nine sections and USM did exceptionally well.
Andrew Buchanan competed in the K5 Open section by himself and placed 142nd out of 288.
In the K5 U900 section, USM took fourth place out of 63 teams. This was the largest section with 406 players and USM had eight players in the section: John Venable (trophy for 23rd place), Sam Schlesinger (trophy for 35th place), Yaseen Najeeb (trophy for 56th place), Charlie Burton, Matthew Mason, Robert Mason, Ishan Rodman, and Saji Rodman.
In the K1 championship section, USM took ninth place out of 39 teams. There were 247 kindergarteners and first graders in the section. We had a team of six players in the section: Zachary Chua, Jack Glusman, Hadi Najeeb, Matthew Cooper, Isabella Ilchenko, and Danavi Wollin.
USM students also performed exceptionally well at the National High School Chess Championship in Atlanta April 17-20.
In the open section, Upper Schoolers James Bowen, Saptarshi Ghose, and Debby Unger and fourth grader Sasha Velikanov placed 29th. Sasha finished 96th out of 338 players. He also placed 10th in the blitz tournament (5-minute games).
In the U1200 section, students Andrew Buchanan, Kern Khanna, and Bradley Schlesinger each competed and fifth grader Andrew Buchanan placed 30th receiving an honorable mention.
Upper Schoolers Charlotte Lange and Will Stearns joined Middle Schoolers Sam Schlesinger and Jackson Marline in the U800 section. The team took home the 15th place trophy.

May 16, 2008 - USM Honors Mary "Peetie" Basson On Saturday, May 10, the USM community held a reception honoring the 39 years Peetie devoted to USM. Click here for photo and speech highlights from the evening.
May 15, 2008 - Upper School Teacher Talks About the Earthquake in China with Fox 6 Upper School Chinese teacher Haiyun Lu talked to Fox 6 news about the earthquake in China and how she finally heard that her brother was safe. Watch the clip here.
May 14, 2008 - Students Learn the Benefits of Learning a Foreign Language
Matt Beyer, translator for Milwaukee Bucks player Yi Jianlian, visited USM Upper School students and discussed how learning Chinese opened up doors he never imagined. Knowing virtually no Chinese, Beyer moved to China after graduating high school. He lived there for two years, learning the language and adjusting to the culture. Beyer encouraged students to pursue a foreign language and take advantage of any opportunities they have to study abroad.
May 12, 2008 - Author Visits Upper School Author Christine Schutt visited USM's Upper School to discuss her newest novel, All Souls. Schutt is also the author of A Day, A Night, Another Day, Summer and Florida, which was a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award for Fiction.
May 9, 2008 - Students Learn About Storytelling from Author On May 8, Leif Enger, author of the popular novel Peace Like a River, visited Upper School students. Enger spoke to students about the importance of stories and read an excerpt from his newest novel, So Brave, Young, and Handsome. He also autographed copies of both books. May 6, 2008 - Upper School Scientist Places Second at National Competition
Junior Ishaan Guptasarma came in second place in his division at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Orlando at the end of April. He won a $6,000 college tuition scholarship. Congratulations!
May 6, 2008 - Students Named National Finalists in History Competition After stellar performances at the State National History Day contest on May 3 in Madison, four USM projects were chosen as national finalists, earning the right to compete in the national finals at the University of Maryland-College Park, in June. In addition, several outstanding projects received honorable mentions and other recognitions. Congratulations to: eighth graders Kevlyn Holmes and Julia Rothacker (junior group performance, Kennedy and Khrushchev: The Leaders of Two Nations), junior Anna Patel (senior individual documentary, London Bombardments), freshman Laura Ball (senior individual documentary, Ruffled Feathers: Women and the Conservation Movement), and seniors Sophia Zebell and Sasha Stadler (senior group documentary, Frank Zeidler: The Last Socialist) for qualifying for the national finals. In the junior division, honorable mentions were given to eighth graders Alex Bettadapur (individual exhibit, Eyeball to Eyeball); Piper Meisinger (individual exhibit, Dams for Dam Sake); Caroline Bridges, Brooke Kwasny, and Jessica Trinkl (group performance, Not For Ourselves Alone); and Adam Brostowicz, Jack Casey, and Nick Ivarson (group documentary, The Catastrophe of the War that Never Was). In the senior division, junior Eleanor Hagerman was awarded a cash prize from the Wisconsin Labor History Society for her individual documentary on The Allen-Bradley Strike of 1970. Students qualified to participate in the State National History Day contest after being named state finalists at the Regional competition held in March.
