Why USM?

We encourage excellence in personal effort, behavior, and academics, focusing on both character and intellect.

We cultivate an extraordinary enthusiasm for learning with students of varying interests, abilities, and backgrounds, giving them individual attention and helping them reach the outermost range of their academic potential and personal promise.

We view each student as an individual and encourage students to become enthusiastic, self-directed learners.  We make sure learning is gratifying and meaningful to every child.

"…just coming into final semester exam time here and almost done with college.  I love it here but often remember USM and the great base it provided me for continuation in higher education.  Thanks for all the wonderful, tireless effort you invested to make sure we did our best!"

Through the Common Trust, we encourage our students to respect, befriend, and support each other.

USM's diverse family of students, faculty, parents, and alumni shares common goals, a natural warmth, respect, and a lifetime affinity for the School and one another.  We believe in teaching children consistent ways to lead happy, productive lives…we call this creating patterns for life.

Through our basic philosophy of community behavior, known as the Common Trust, members of the University School of Milwaukee family support each other in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

"At USM, you never have to worry about where to sit at lunch.  Assigned seating allows students to become friends with kids from all different grades and faculty members….It's a great way to meet new people and talk to teachers outside the classroom."

Our no-cut athletic policy encourages everyone to compete – 80% of our Middle and Upper School students play on our teams.

In addition to the rich academic curriculum, students have unparalleled access to explore a full selection of athletics, fine arts, special interest clubs, social activities, and community service programs.  We offer technological resources and opportunities to learn in and out of the classroom that go significantly beyond those offered by other local schools.

"Before I came to USM, I was too timid to join the choir or take painting class but USM opened my eyes to the wonderful world of fine arts.  Had I not come to USM, I may never have had the opportunity to build my artistic confidence."

"I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed your School's Grandparents' Day.  …I watched a video on earthquakes (with my grandchild) and we played bingo in Spanish…"

Our alumni are leaders in their colleges, their professions, and their communities.

Throughout the Lower, Middle and Upper School years, a USM education develops the strongest possible foundation for achieving success in college and for embracing the challenges of the 21st century.  Students develop character, skills, confidence, and a work ethic that lead them to make good decisions, contribute to society, and enjoy rewarding lives.  The Class of 2007 was accepted to many of the finest colleges in the country.  Alumni consistently credit USM for providing an invaluable foundation for their future endeavors and achievements.

"The shared commitment of the school's leaders, teachers, parents, and supporters keeps me inspired."

"… I was further impressed with the intelligence, insight and creativity of the younger alumni I met and observed during a recent area alumni event – a positive sign of USM's effective admissions policy and education philosophy."
