June 7, 2008 – A Historic Conclusion to the USM Year in Sports

The 2008 spring sports season, one of the most successful in USM's history, was coming to an end. Only two teams, girls soccer and boys tennis, were still playing in their respective playoff competitions, and they both hoped to do the School proud by winning a state championship. The soccer team was playing against New Holstein at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, where many eager fans showed up to cheer on the team. The tennis team, playing in Madison, was surrounded by fewer fans in person, but the team knew that the USM community hoped it would do well. Each team achieved its highest goal. Robin Burrell made a game-clinching save in a penalty-kick shootout to help the soccer team to a win in the division three state championship. About four hours later, the tennis team won its third consecutive state championship trophy, defeating Appleton Xavier 7-0 in the finals.

Baseball

The baseball team's playoff run came to an end in the sectional finals against St. Mary's Springs. After defeating Shoreland Lutheran in the sectional semifinals by a score of 5-3 the Wildcats took on St. Mary's Springs in the second game of the sectional tournament. The Wildcats lost 10-0 to end their season with a record of 20-5.

Golf

The golf team participated in the state meet in Verona this past week. The team finished in fifth place overall with a two-day score of 637. Dan Simonsen led the team, finishing in a tie for tenth place individually with a score of 155. The other varsity golfers were Billy Crimmins (160), Will Wakefield (164), Matt Bures (164), and Gareth Hatersley (166). No other team at state had such good balance, as every other team had at least one member shoot over 170.

Boys Tennis

To sum up the past week in boys tennis, the USM team made history. They became one of the few schools ever to boast both singles and doubles state champions in the same year. Nick Buckley won the state singles championship without losing a single set in any of his matches. Knute Gundersen, who lost to Buckley in the semifinals, finished third. On the doubles side, the team of Ryan Stewart and Sam Walker won a championship of their own. They also got through the tournament without losing a set. Chris Terris and Brian Butler finished in seventh place after losing in the quarterfinals. This talented team now moves on to team state, where they will clearly be a force to be reckoned with.

Girls Soccer

The soccer team continued its undefeated season in the state tournament, winning the sectional semi-final match-up against Random Lake and then the sectional final against Midwest Classic Conference rival The Prairie School. The score against Random Lake was 6-0, with Betsy Lucas scoring two goals. The game against Prairie was closer, coming down to the final minutes. Kelsie Harris scored a goal with 35 seconds left in the game to help the Wildcats win 2-1. The team moves on to state, where it will play Palmyra-Eagle in the semifinals.

Baseball

The baseball team played two games in its state tournament. First, they went up against Brookfield Academy in the regional final. They won 17-7. Jack Wigdale went 4-5 with a triple and three stolen bases in that game. Then, against Horicon in the sectional semi-final, the game was incredibly close. It ended with Andrew Patanapaiboon's walk-off home run in the seventh inning to win the game, 9-8. That home run completed a come back from a four-run deficit early on in the game.

Boys Golf

The golf team had its sectional meet this past week at Oakwood. The team finished in second place overall, three strokes behind Catholic Memorial, with a score of 330. With this finish, they qualified for the state meet for the second consecutive year. Dan Simonsen led the team with a 77, which placed him in second place overall at the sectional.

Boys Lacrosse

The team previously concluded its season.
