Diversity Statement
Diversity at University School of Milwaukee
In October 2005, the Board of Trustees developed the following philosophy statement:
Statement on Diversity at USM
In keeping with its educational mission and tradition, University School of Milwaukee honors the dignity and rights of all USM students, families, faculty, administration, staff, and visitors. USM believes that recognition of and respect for our diversity of opinions, experiences, and backgrounds is fundamental to building a learning community where students learn to think broadly, critically, and independently. To enhance this community, USM adheres to a philosophy of community behavior called the Common Trust, in which we agree to relate to one another and to the community with respect, trust, honesty, fairness, and kindness. To prepare our students for the opportunities of a global and diverse world, we offer an inclusive education in a pluralistic setting and teach students how to relate to one another with sensitivity to the commonalities and differences among us.
Our commitment to diversity begins with our mission statement, where we pledge to:
- "cultivate the value of community among students, their families, alumni, faculty, and staff and instill in students an appreciation for individuals and their diversity."
In 2002, the School formed a Diversity Study Team consisting of several faculty and staff members and chaired by the Head of School. This group developed a Preliminary Report on Diversity at USM, which outlined reasons why diversity was important for a school like ours, identified the types of diversity that made the most sense in a school environment, and analyzed the dimensions of school life where diversity made the most difference. This report formed the basis for the formation of a more broadly representative Diversity Steering Committee.
From February 2004 to June 2005, a board-appointed Diversity Steering Committee met to make recommendations to the Board. The Committee consisted of three trustees, three parents, three faculty, and three students. After surveying all parents, faculty, and students (grades 8-12), interviewing over 60 parents and faculty, and visiting 15 comparable schools, the Steering Committee made its final report to the Board of Trustees in October of 2005.
We welcome your interest in diversity at University School, and encourage you to direct your questions and observations to the Head of the School or the relevant Division Head.
