Leadership Development
in the Upper School
Leadership development is a strong and dynamic aspect of the Upper School. Fully 25% of the student body fills leadership positions every year. These positions include sports captains, elected and unelected student government representatives, club leaders, and class representatives.
At University School, students become leaders for the real world by serving on the school disciplinary committee, engaging in an annual process to present proposals for improvement, and even traveling in unique leadership experiences such as Harvard Model Congress, Yale Model United Nations, Fed Challenge, and the Youth Leadership Institute.
All students participate in leadership retreats in the freshmen and senior years. In these retreats, the Collaborative Leadership Model is presented through theory and experiences that help to shape the students' ideas of themselves as individuals and members of a community.
Specific opportunities for leadership development include:
Harvard Model Congress
Yale Model UN
