Curriculum

Middle School - Grades Five Through Eight

English

English focuses on composition, literature, reading comprehension strategies and analysis, grammar and usage, spelling, and vocabulary development.  Oral communication and listening skills are also emphasized.

Mathematics

The mathematics program is designed to lead students from basic arithmetic to the skills, applications, and abstract reasoning needed in geometry and algebra.  Mathematical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving are integral parts of mathematics study. In grades five, six, and seven, we use the renowned Singapore Math program, supplemented by many additional resources. Enrichment projects are planned throughout the year at each grade level.

Social Studies

The social studies curriculum increases in complexity over the course of the Middle School years.  Students explore many topics including world culture and geography, world history, economics, civics, and American history which culminates in an eight grade trip to Washington D.C. in the spring.  A variety of printed text, visual media, and computer technology is integrated throughout the classroom.

Science

Through reading, discussion, research, experimentation, and exploration, students learn the vocabulary, methods, topics, and resources that form the basics of science study.  Courses include the study of earth, life, and physical science; experimental design and methodology; zoology; human anatomy and physiology; chemistry; classical physics; astronomy; and meteorology.

World Languages

Students continue their study of French and Spanish from Lower School. Middle School world language includes reading, writing, conversation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and culture.  Students learn sentence patterns through memorized dialogues and role playing, as well as through speaking and listening.  Topics of grammar study include basic verb forms, irregular verbs, agreement of nouns and adjectives with antecedents, and idiomatic expressions.

Fine Arts

Visual Arts: The visual arts program is designed to allow students to develop visual and artistic capacity through four areas of study and exploration:  art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and art production.  Students learn to demonstrate the power of imagery to convey emotions and feelings, concepts and values, and many kinds of cultural and social meanings.

Music: The music curriculum supports students as they continue to explore and develop their knowledge of music.  Students select among band, orchestra, harp, or chorus to develop their singing or playing skills.  All students learn about music history, literacy, and composition as they prepare for concerts or complete music assignments.

Drama: The drama program is a spiraling curriculum in which students explore theater and creative drama through age-appropriate activities and exercises.  Students develop the skills and abilities necessary to foster cooperation and build self-confidence.  They also acquire a strong knowledge base of theatre history.

Physical Education

Physical education in the Middle School is a transition from creative movement exploration in Lower School to sports skills and lifetime activities.  Students are instructed in proper warm-up procedures and the relationship of each activity to lifetime fitness.  A major emphasis is placed on effort and personal responsibility, with the goal of promoting a commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle.

Advising

Through a comprehensive advising program, the Middle School aims to develop students socially, academically, and emotionally with an emphasis on responsibility and growth.  Close communications between student, advisor, and parent is an integral part of the advising program.
