*Once upon a time, there were hard-to cross boundaries between cultures, languages and geography. Today, these boundaries are steadily shrinking. It's not because the world is getting smaller, but because our world view is getting broader.

As we prepare students for the 21st century, it is vital to embrace this global "oneness."

By developing a greater understanding of the way people from other cultures and countries live, think and act, students will be equipped to successfully interact in global communities and workplaces.

At USM, out interactive approach to global education engages students' minds as well as their emotions, encouraging them to be "appreciative and curious global beings."

We begin with introducing Spanish in PK and French in JK and SK.

Our Lower School students stage marketplaces in their classrooms, bargaining for and purchasing goods in French or Spanish. They mark the dimensions of a typical Haitian house in their classrooms, comparing the small space to the dimensions of their own bedrooms. They hold video conferences with students in France and Honduras, learning about a typical day thousands of miles away.

Middle School students continue their studies of French and Spanish. They participate with others around the globe in 24-hour Earth Day webcasts, experience Ecuador with the help of a visiting Ecuadorian missionary, and perform choral and drum music from around the world.

In the Upper School, Mandarin Chinese courses have brought students opportunities to learn a new language and culture and a new Global Studies program will bring students to an even greater awareness of the world in which they live.
