Former USM Football Coach Named to Hall of Fame
University School facutly member Don Forti was recently named to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Forti will be honored with induction to the Hall of Fame on March 29, 2014.
The WFCA grants this highest level of honor to coaches who “have made a difference in football” in Wisconsin.
Forti made a big difference in football at University School. He was the head football coach at USM for 25 years. Under Forti’s leadership, USM football teams compiled a record of 137-107. During that successful span, his teams won four conference championships and made fifteen play-off appearances.
The WFCA awarded Forti its 100 wins plaque in 1999. Forti just kept going. Eight years later, in Forti’s final season as a head coach, the USM football team posted a 9-2 season. The Wildcats advanced to Level 2 of the WIAA Playoffs for the first time in the school’s history that season.
University School’s Athletic Director Rick Johns said, “Don Forti is at the vanguard of our football program. He makes sure that Wildcat football is educationally based and is well rooted in our School’s philosophy. He sees to it that our kids play the game the right way; at USM we call it ‘football the Forti-way’. It is through Don’s tireless efforts and leadership that our program will continue to grow and compete at the highest possible level.”
After Forti completed his successful career as University School’s head football coach, USM promoted him to the position of Director of Football. This was a newly created position that provided leadership for the successful operation of the School’s football program. In 2012 Forti stepped away from his many different roles within our football program to focus on his teaching duties and his position as USM’s Fitness Center Coordinator.
USM further recognized Forti’s football success in 2012 when USM unveiled “Don Forti Stadium” in recognition of Coach Forti and his many successful years as a coach and teacher at University School.
The Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame is located in the Fieldhouse at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in the Atrium at Lambeau Field in Green Bay. It has been inducting members to its Hall of Fame since 1980.
