Upper School Students Named Volunteers of the Year
Several Upper School students were recently named 2019 High School Group Volunteers of the Year by the United Community Center (UCC) in recognition of their work at various organizations, including Bruce-Guadalupe Community School (BGCS). A group of sophomores, led by former BGCS student Eibar Robledo ’20, volunteered during a teacher in-service day at UCC in November, where they served as classroom assistants at the school and helped preschool teachers throughout the school day. In addition, USM juniors have participated in service retreat days, where they helped with lunches, playing bingo, and fostering conversations at the senior center.
“We are thankful for the award, but our service with UCC throughout the years has not felt like work,” said Robledo. “We’ve all had a great time, whether working with students or with senior citizens. The responses of the children and seniors are always positive and always ending with either hugs or much appreciation for our work (which we love, of course!). We are always more than happy to visit the UCC and we look forward to spending more time with them in the near future.”
“USM has had a close connection with BGCS for many years through the Spanish Honor Society and more recently through our service retreat day,” said Holly Morse, Upper School Spanish teacher. “We are so honored to be recognized as the 2019 High School Volunteer Group of the Year and hope to continue building the bridge between our two organizations.”
