Eighth-Grader Wins Gold Medal at National History Day Finals

Individual documentary wins gold at national competition.
Congratulations to University School's Lexie Van Den Heuvel '16, who was awarded the gold medal in the individual documentary category at the National History Day competition finals in College Park, MD on Thursday.

Lexie’s documentary “Counting the Dead” centered on the medical reforms introduced by English Nurse Florence Nightingale (1820-1910).

The documentary showcased how Nightingale revolutionized the British health care system through statistical analysis. This analysis led to significantly improved hospital sanitation, which substantially decreased soldier disease and mortality rates during and after the Crimean War.

Lexie became the first USM student to win a gold medal at the national competition, which featured students from across the United States, Guam, American Samoa, and International and Department of Defense Schools from Europe.
