Prospective Student Testing FAQ

List of 5 frequently asked questions.

  • What do the Middle School and Upper School admission tests entail?

    A. Prospective students will complete two sections of an independent school exam—quantitative reasoning and reading comprehension—as well as a writing sample. Students are allotted 40 minutes to complete the first two sections, and 20 minutes to complete the writing sample.
  • What are you looking for in the writing sample?

    A. Prospective students will have a choice of questions to answer, and will be permitted to write for 20 minutes. They will be evaluated on their ability to organize thoughts and express oneself in written form. Students will use a pen/pencil and lined paper, rather than an electronic device.
  • Do parents get to see the results of the testing?

    A. Yes; within 10 business days, the results of the test will be sent home and the writing sample will become part of the applicant's admission file.
  • Should prospective students bring anything to the test?

    A. Classrooms can vary in temperature, so a sweatshirt or sweater can be helpful. We will provide water and snacks, but a water bottle from home is certainly permissible. We will also provide a pen or pencil and paper. Please leave all calculators at home as they are not required for this test.
  • How can prospective students prepare for the test?

    A. We recommend a great night of sleep and a hearty breakfast!
