Robert Burch MUS’52 Named 2018 Alumni Service Award Recipient
Congratulations to Robert Burch MUS’52, who was recognized as the recipient of the 2018 Alumni Service Award on Thursday, May 17. He was honored by the USM Alumni Association during the Upper School Honors Assembly.
Burch enrolled at Milwaukee University School as a freshman in 1947, and throughout his senior year served as a student leader of the school. Upon his graduation in 1952, he attended Princeton University for his undergraduate degree, and later earned his MBA from Harvard University.
Burch has served as the general partner at A. W. Jones—the oldest hedge fund firm in the country, which was founded by his father-in-law Alfred Winslow Jones—since 1983. Previously, he was the chairman of Jonathan Engineered Solutions in Irvine, California.
Upon his 60th reunion year, Burch wanted to become more involved in the life of University School, and to leave a lasting legacy. He approached the school with the thought of contributing to USM on behalf of his MUS Class of 1952 and in honor of the late Frank Spigener, who was the beloved MUS headmaster and history teacher from 1927 through 1954. “Thinking about my 60th reunion, I was once again reminded what a strong education I received from MUS—what a solid foundation was constructed there and how deeply influential Frank Spigener was in all of it,” he said. “This seemed like an appropriate time to say ‘thank you’ to Mr. Spigener.”
Recognizing the significant impact of Spigener’s leadership on many student’s lives, Burch established and endowed in perpetuity the Frank S. Spigener Service and Leadership Award in 2016. Each year, the award recognizes a senior who, over his/her time at USM, has demonstrated the spirit of caring, humanitarianism, and volunteerism exemplified by Spigener. The recipient receives a cash award of at least $1,000, and the privilege to designate a grant of at least $2,000 to a local Milwaukee 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of his/her choice.
