Five Middle School Students Participate in Honor Band Festival
Five Middle School band students were chosen to participate in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Honor Band Festival, held oNov. 16 to 18. Students from all over Southeastern Wisconsin gathered on the UWM campus that Friday afternoon for rehearsals, and the weekend culminated in concerts by all three different bands on Sunday afternoon. USM was represented by Inga Lofgren ’23, flute; Nathan Merriweather ’24, baritone saxophone; Srikar Mudili ’24, clarinet; Sam Sardas-Trevorrow ’24, tenor saxophone; and Zachary Sardas-Trevorrow ’23, clarinet.
In order to be chosen to participate in the festival, band directors first nominate students for consideration by UWM. Then, the band staff at UWM makes final selections based on the recommendations and ratings of the school directors. Of more than 800 nominees, around 300 students are chosen. USM’s director of bands, Dr. Dain Shuler, was very pleased that all five of his nominees were chosen to take part in the weekend.
“Students rehearse incredibly long hours,” said Shuler. “In addition to the introductory rehearsal on Friday evening, students are practicing nearly all day Saturday—with a few breaks for master class instruction by UWM music faculty and listening to concerts given by UWM groups—and have a final concert prep rehearsal Sunday morning. In all, students spend over 12 hours in less than two days putting together a full concert.”
