Trevor Smith ’19 Selected to Perform with National Honor Choir

Trevor Smith ’19 has been selected to perform with the 2019 national American Choral Directors Association (NCDA) honor choir in March. Smith will perform with the all-male TTBB (Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Bass 1-Baritone, Bass 2; a four-part men’s choir) high school/collegiate choir, one of four NCDA honor choirs. The TTBB group consists of approximately 200 students who will work with conductor Jefferson Johnson. Those who were selected will travel to Kansas City, where they will rehearse with a master conductor and perform choral music at the very highest level.

Smith worked closely with Ellen Shuler, Preschool, Middle School, and Upper School music teacher and Fine Arts Department chair, on the application process. Shuler practiced with Smith, recorded him singing over the course of three days, and submitted his application for the blind audition process. Shuler and Smith created the recording in one of the new practice rooms in the performing arts center.

"I’m really excited about being invited to perform; I know it’s a huge opportunity,” said Smith. “But I’m also a little bit nervous because I haven’t done anything like this caliber before, in terms of choirs. There’s a lot of music you have to learn and they’re very harsh on how well you have to know the music so there is a bit of pressure there. They expect a high level of musicianship, but I’m looking forward to it.”

“Trevor performed with the Midwest MCDA regional choir last year, but the national honor choirs only happen every other year so it’s really a big honor to be selected, and the audition process required a lot of practice work and dedication,” said Shuler. “I’m really proud of him, and all of the USM students who applied.”
