USM Alumnus and Student Both Honored at Black Excellence Awards
Congratulations to Steven Weddle ’76 and Jordyn Smith ’19, who were both recently honored at the 34th Annual Black Excellence Awards presented by The Milwaukee Times. Weddle, managing director, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, served as the event’s keynote speaker, and Smith was one of 11 recipients of the 2019 Louvenia Johnson Scholarship.
“I was excited to meet Steven Weddle and hear his story about growing up in one of the most marginalized zip codes (53206) in Milwaukee,” said Smith. “Not only did I listen, but I related so much to his stories because I too am a product of that same zip code and I’ve had family members sacrifice for me to go to USM in order to obtain such a great education. If I hadn’t received the Louvenia Johnson Scholarship, I would have never had the opportunity to interact with so many great leaders and advocates. It was great to be a part of something that honored so many pioneers within the Milwaukee community. I’m very glad and fortunate to have been recognized at such an incredible event, and given a scholarship to continue my education at an esteemed college of my choosing.”
This year’s theme was “The Excellence of Imagination, Boldness, and Innovation: Honoring Our Entrepreneurs.” Over the past 34 years, the Black Excellence Awards have honored nearly 1,100 individuals for their outstanding contributions and great leadership.
