Panel of Experts Visits USM to Discuss Assisting Those with Disabilities
On Tuesday, Feb. 19, USM freshmen met with a panel of local experts and learned about the work they do in helping people with disabilities. The panelists were visiting as part of the school’s community engagement program. Prior to the panelists’ visit, students watched the documentary film “Shooting Beauty.”
Panelists were Chris VandenHouten of GiGi's Playhouse Milwaukee; Roni Andrew of Top Soccer; Jordan Luhr and Karen Cohen, both of Balance Inc.; Megan Murray of Life Navigators, and Jana C. of Easter Seals.
USM’s community engagement program educates students about issues that exist both in the Milwaukee community and in other parts of the country. The purpose of the program is to build the awareness in our students of the many needs in the Milwaukee area and to encourage them to develop their own ideas about how to make our community better for all. By understanding more about their community and its problems or issues, students have a better sense of others’ needs.
The benefits of the program include building empathy, teaching students about their Milwaukee community, learning about community service opportunities, fostering relationships with community partners, and more.
