University School of Milwaukee students and teachers have been adjusting well to distance learning over the past few weeks. While the actual teaching and learning appear to be going smoothly, there is no question that the loss of the social, in-person, community-building events and activities has been one of the most difficult parts of this situation so far.
While USM still looks forward to being able to celebrate the Class of 2020 and all their accomplishments, the school has made the difficult decision to postpone Commencement. Two alternate dates for this celebration have been identified: Saturday, June 27 or Saturday, August 8, and the school hopes to be able to confirm or postpone the June date by no later than the beginning of June. In addition, discussions are taking place regarding other milestone events that mark a senior’s final month of school, including the senior dinner, senior send-off, honors assembly, and more.
“We know how important these events are, not only to our seniors and their families, but also to our entire community, and we did not come to this decision to postpone lightly,” said Head of School Laura Fuller. “Through the end of last week, we have had many conversations about travel complications, vendor logistics, and, most importantly, the safety of our students and families.”
