University School of Milwaukee welcomed author Gene Luen Yang for a special virtual author visit during community time on Monday, April 20. The event was hosted by Upper School Librarian Laura Klein and the Upper School student book club, in partnership with Boswell Book Company. Yang is a National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author, who just published a new graphic memoir, “Dragon Hoops.”
Upper School students and faculty members joined in on the call to hear about Yang’s life and career, as well as ask him questions about being a professional author, among others. USM’s Chinese Culture Club, led by Haiyun Lu, Upper School Chinese teacher, plans to read “Dragon Hoops” and “American Born Chinese” (also written by Yang).
Yang has been a long-time collaborator with USM. His virtual visits to the school began in 2007 in Dr. Laurie Walczak’s 8th grade English class, on a brand-new (at the time) platform called Skype.
