Senior Lisa Wong was named a 2020 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Excellence Scholar, one of 193 graduating high school students in Wisconsin to receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation.
“I am beyond grateful to have been given this scholarship and I would love to thank all the teachers and counselors who have helped me with both college and scholarship applications,” said Wong. “Thank you also to the Herb Kohl Foundation for providing this scholarship for my educational career—I’m truly honored.”
Excellence Scholarship recipients have demonstrated excellence in the academic arena and high motivation to achieve, have displayed a broad range of activity and leadership outside the academic setting, and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond.
Wong has earned many awards, including third place in the medical category of the 2019 Badger State Science and Engineering Fair; gold medal winner in the Wisconsin High School Forensics Association state tournament in 2017 and 2019; Scholastic Art & Writing gold key winner (2019 and 2020) and American Voices award winner (2019); and USM 2019 Cum Laude Society inductee, among others.
The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by Herb Kohl, philanthropist and businessman, in 1990. Currently in its 30th year of recognizing educational excellence, the foundation has awarded $20.9 million to Wisconsin educators, principals, students and schools. “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation,” Kohl said. “I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students, teachers, and principals and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future.”
