University School of Milwaukee opened its doors for the 2020-21 school year today, and while the school’s opening ceremony looked different this year, it was still a special day to welcome new and returning students, faculty, and staff.
USM seniors were invited to watch the event in-person from the front circle while the other grades (and parents) watched virtually from classrooms and homes. The Board of Trustees President Steve Guy gave the opening remarks and was followed by Head of School Steve Hancock.
This year’s senior class prefects—Neil Dogra, Anna Fitzsimmons, Jimmy Fox, Lauren Glusman, Maddy Megal, and Thomas Wright—followed with speeches on the Common Trust tenet of trust. During their speeches, Aisha Shittu ’29 held a banner featuring the word trust. The ceremony concluded with Middle School and Upper School Physical Education Teacher and Fitness Center Coordinator Don Forti, the school’s longest-tenured faculty member, ringing the ceremonial first bell of the 2020-21 school year. Minutes later, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was also held at the foot of the 8th grade stairs as the ”seniors” of the Middle School formally started their school year.
