Upper School students at University School of Milwaukee were pleased to welcome bestselling author Elizabeth Acevedo on Monday, Dec. 10, 2018. Acevedo is author of the award-winning novel “The Poet X,” which was required reading for 9th-grade students in English I.
Acevedo’s novel was a new course addition for the 2018-19 academic year. “We added ‘The Poet X’ because it fulfills several curricular components: a teenage, female narrator and voice from a person of color, a contemporary setting, many Shakespeare-esque literary devices, and a thematic connection to the overall course,” said Upper School English Teacher Kate Gay. “We took a chance on a new author and novel and it has paid off more than we ever could have expected as many students have embraced reading through this new offering.”
Acevedo spoke to students about her upbringing in New York City, her Dominican heritage, her love of poetry and writing from a young age, and why she felt it was important to represent the Latinx cultural heritage in her books.
“The Poet X” is a National Book Award Winner and Globe-Horn Book Award winner for Best Fiction of 2018.
