Summer I.D.E.A.S. Grades 4-12

Rising fourth through twelfth graders can experience a number of weekly 45-minute classes to review or advance their math, reading, or world language skills. They can also enjoy a variety of enrichment classes to learn new art skills, further develop their acting skills or gain more experience with coding, gaming and robotics

  • ACT Prep: English, Reading, Math, and Science

    Gain direct experience with all four multiple-choice sections on the ACT. Become familiar with the types of questions you will encounter as well as learn a variety of strategies to attack these questions. Fred Silver has designed this in-depth workshop based on 20+ years of experience successfully preparing students to take the ACT.

  • ACT/SAT Writing Prep

    Focus on the writing section of the ACT and SAT. Learn how to plan and organize your impromptu or argumentative essays as well as what traps to avoid. Become familiar with the qualities scorers use when evaluating essays.

  • Acting for the Stage

    This intensive acting course will offer an opportunity for students to hone their skills while learning how to critique the work of others. Students will memorize and perform monologues, explore characterization work, work on voice and movement and, of course, have fun!

    This class is for students who are interested in reinforcing all concepts covered in Algebra I. We will cover everything from linear to quadratic functions, factoring polynomials, radical expressions and everything in between.

  • Design Challenge for 3D Printing Advanced (Fusion 360)

    Students will learn advanced design principles for 3D printing and submit a design that solves a problem. Students will receive one or more 3D prints of their actual design by mail upon the completion of this course. Students taking this course should have some basic CAD experience with Tinkercad or other basic CAD programs.

  • Design Challenge for 3D Printing Intro (Tinkercad)

  • E-sports for PC Gamers

    Explore the world of E-sports, or competitive video gaming, with the Coach and one of the star players of the USM E-sports organization. We will play a variety of video games on our home PC rigs, focusing on skills and strategy. We will also watch professional matches to see what we can learn from professional gamers. We can also game casually for fun on Nintendo Switch.

    Supplies Needed: PC gaming rig and internet connection, access to the games, Discord (for a private channel), and Twitch if you’d like to stream. Nintendo Switch is an option if classmates have them.
  • Essay Writing for Tests and Papers

    Learn how to effectively draft an intro, body paragraph, and conclusion, as well as how to structure a paper in order to best meet the needs of your audience. Additionally, learn how to compose strong responses to short answer questions on tests.
